A brief history of glue
The oldest glue used by humans is the vegetable pitch, a pasty substance extracted from the birch bark for nearly 200 000 years. From prehistoric times to Ancient Egypt and the nomadic peoples of the Central Asian steppes, vegetable and animal glues have gradually developed and diversified.
Over the centuries, the techniques for preserving glue have also evolved. From a vegetable powder, it became a liquid substance and then, with the addition of various additives such as oil (linseed or bitter almond) to limit the risk of mould, the glue became an essential element for the development of new manufacturing processes. Today we can distinguish two main families of glues, the so-called natural ones (starch glue, fish glue, etc.) and the synthetic glues whose different properties offer specific advantages depending on their use.
A product that can meet multiple needs
Not all adhesives have the same composition which explains why the speed of polymerization is not always the same. Adhesives polymerize, i.e. they dry on the surface; resins will harden completely while silicones will be more waterproof and elastic.
The industrial production of these adhesives has made it possible to obtain a quality of assembly unimaginable before. They are suitable for many different materials, including vinyl substances that will adhere to absorbent materials, polyurethane glue remarkable for its capabilities in thermal insulation, solvent-based products suitable for plastic materials or acrylic glues with high adhesion and water dispersion base (for plasterboard, mineral fiber boards, etc.).
